“Breaking the Chains” of Generational Curses

As a mom of a teenage daughter, my goals have shifted while experiencing an awesome, daunting, and privileged responsibility of raising my daughter. One of those paradigm shifts is, daily prayer, seeking out spiritual wisdom to “break every chain” and/or any and all generational curse(s) that could prevent my daughter/our daughters from living out God’s intended purposes for their lives. One of my greatest fears is that my daughter and our daughters, if not adequately and compassionately guided, may be more susceptible and vulnerable to repeat some of the patterns and mistakes of these current and previous generations.

For each woman/mother, the pathology, of those generational curses, may vary. These generational curses each have devastating and sometimes life-altering and or life-long consequences.  Some examples, of some of these generational curses, –non-existent relationships between the daughter and her father (this dynamic can produce an altered and fractured self-image for the teenaged daughter), this could lead to low self-esteem, the low self-esteem could lead to promiscuous behaviors or seeking attention in inappropriate ways especially tied to premature expressions of sexuality, this type of behavior can lead to relationships that are inappropriate for the teenage child, and of course these behaviors could lead to teenage or premature pregnancy, babies attempting to raise babies, ill-fated marriages, and unnecessary divorces. Some daughters who don’t have a stable and productive relationship with their fathers may date older men as a substitute for a father figure or become promiscuous in their search for love and attention.

In the article “9 Ways to Break Generational Curses” published in October of 2014 by Larry Huck, my top (3) are listed below.

How do we “break the chains” of premature sexual behavior, low self-esteem, and failed marriages/relationships?

RECOGNIZE THE CURSE. In order to get set free and stay free, you have to admit you have a problem. That sounds simple, but we live in a day and age of denial. No matter what has happened to us in our lives, each of us are responsible for the choices and decisions we make. If you really want to be free, you will accept that responsibility.

BREAK THE CURSE. As we apply God’s Word and power to our lives, and as we choose to walk in righteousness and obedience to God, the chains of bondage will be broken. There are three steps to breaking a generational curse:

REVERSE THE CURSE. There are three keys you can use to reverse the curse and live in victory: (1) Recognize your enemy. We battle not with flesh and blood. Our enemy is Satan, and the battle is spiritual. (2) Forgive people who have hurt you. (3) Treat causes, not symptoms (for example, insecurity, jealousy or fear).

RELEASE THE POWER OF LOVE. To become people whose lives are transformed by the love of God, we must not only get rid of what holds us captive and keeps us in bondage, but we must also be filled up with love–for God, for self and for others. Unconditional love will release blessing. To know more of the love of God in your life, love those who have hurt you, those who have opposed you and those who have sinned against you.
